The right financial strategy matters. So does the way you arrive at it.

At Vertex Planning Partners, three values guide how we work:

Integrity. Do what is right and uphold high standards.

Client First. Keep the client’s interests, goals, and relationships at the center of the work.

Consistent and Purposeful. Approach every relationship with discipline, intention, and a commitment to doing meaningful work over time.

Those values influence how we communicate, collaborate, make recommendations, and build long-term relationships.

Because values should not simply live on a wall.

They should show up in the work.

An estate plan should not be something you create once and never revisit.

Life changes.

Families change. Assets change. Businesses change. Retirement plans change. Charitable priorities change.

And sometimes the plan that once made perfect sense no longer reflects what you want today.

Regular review can help keep beneficiaries, documents, account structures, and long-term goals aligned.

Estate planning works best when it remains connected to the rest of your financial plan, rather than operating as a separate set of documents.

When was the last time you reviewed your estate plan in the context of your broader financial picture?

Sophisticated wealth planning requires more than strong investment management. It requires someone who can see how the pieces fit together.

Today we are highlighting Christopher Huston, Chief Investment Officer and Managing Partner at Vertex Planning

Chris brings more than 17 years of experience to his role, leading Vertex's investment research, portfolio construction, capital markets analysis, trading, and portfolio implementation.

His background includes portfolio management and investment strategy at Northern Trust, where he worked with high-net-worth and ultra-high-net-worth families, business owners, retirement plans, and foundations. Earlier in his career, he worked as a banker at JPMorgan Chase.

At Vertex, Chris also oversees the firm's investment technology systems and the team supporting its investment process. His work incorporates formal portfolio construction, asset allocation, quantitative and qualitative due diligence, risk monitoring, and ongoing reporting.

Chris holds the CIMA®, CPWA®, and other investment and fiduciary designations and is currently a CFA Level II candidate.

His role reflects an important part of Vertex's approach: thoughtful investment management is built on research, discipline, and a process designed to serve each client's objectives. The more complex the financial picture becomes, the more important it is to have a disciplined strategy and a team that understands how each decision connects to the next.

For successful business owners, the company is often more than an operating asset.

It may be the primary source of income, the largest component of net worth, the foundation of retirement planning, and a major factor in the family’s estate and legacy strategy.

That is why business-owner planning requires more than looking at the balance sheet.

Entity structure can influence tax exposure. Growth decisions can shape personal wealth. A future sale can affect retirement readiness. Succession planning can determine what transfers to the next generation.

At Vertex Planning Partners, we help business owners look at the full picture by connecting wealth management, tax strategy, estate planning, and long-term financial planning.

Because when the business is one of the most meaningful assets you own, its future deserves a strategy that is just as intentional as the work it took to build it.

Tax planning should not begin when documents are gathered for filing season.

For high-net-worth families and business owners, tax decisions are made throughout the year.

Investment income. Business distributions. Retirement planning. Estate and trust strategy. Charitable giving. Wealth transfer. Asset protection. Liquidity planning.

Each decision can influence the next.

At Vertex Planning Partners, tax planning is integrated into the broader financial picture so tax considerations are part of every conversation, not an afterthought.

That coordinated approach can help families and business owners plan more intentionally and make decisions with a clearer understanding of the long-term impact.

For many families, the hardest financial conversation is not about investments, estate plans, or tax strategy. It is the conversation with the next generation.

When should children or grandchildren learn about the family’s wealth? How much should they know? How do you talk about money in a way that builds responsibility instead of entitlement?

The answer is not to avoid the conversation.
It is to introduce it with intention.

The most effective wealth conversations usually begin long before you discuss specific dollar amounts. They start with values, family history, work ethic, stewardship, and the decisions that helped build and preserve what the family has today.

From there, families can gradually move into financial literacy, structure, governance, and participation.
That staged approach matters because wealth is not just something the next generation may inherit. They need to understand, respect, and eventually help steward it.

When the conversation is delayed too long, it can become overwhelming or reactive. When it is handled thoughtfully over time, it becomes part of how the family builds trust, prepares future leaders, and protects continuity across generations.

At Vertex Planning Partners, we help families create structured, age-appropriate approaches to wealth conversations so the next generation can be informed, grounded, and prepared.
