Rock River Garden Club is proud to present Dixon in Bloom with a donation of $12,500. DIB is the foundation that provides the 300+ hanging petunia baskets for the City of Dixon. In addition to monetary donations, RRGC volunteers spend hundreds of hours helping to plant, pinch back and care for the baskets at Nichols Greenhouse. The baskets/flowers/housing are paid for entirely from donations. The City hires a fantastic crew to water the baskets six days a week! It's a wonderful group effort. Donations to DIB may be sent to P.O Box 127, Dixon.

Stay up to date on the Comprehensive Study Project! Head over to the Documents tab (link below) to take a look at summaries of the outreach conducted during the August project kick-off, including the Visioning Workshop Summary, the Kick-Off Workshops Summary, and the Key Stakeholders Interviews Summary. These documents are a preliminary step in the planning process and do not contain any plan recommendations. They are intended to identify what outreach participants had to say about where Dixon is today and and some of the key existing conditions, issues, and opportunities present in the community.

If you haven't taken the opportunity to fill out the survey, there is still time. We want your input.

Fall is here and the beautiful petunia baskets are being taken down by our city workers next week. Volunteers are needed at Oakwood Cemetery to empty the baskets. Because we had a great turnout of volunteers, last year's effort took just over an hour. Let's hope for that again!

If you can help, please meet Wednesday, October 2nd, 9 a.m. at Oakwood Cemetery. The baskets will be piled up at the east edge of the cemetery near the maintenance building. Helpful tools to bring are garden gloves and small snippers.

Kind and heart-warming words from the new Sauk Valley Media Editor. Welcome and thank you!

Good Morning Readers,

A little over three months ago, I headed into Dixon to be interviewed for the Sauk Valley Media editor position. While it was an exciting drive, I was more than a little nervous.

But as I drove over the Galena Avenue bridge and into downtown, those fears quickly evaporated.

I credit the petunias, the ones in the baskets adorning both bridges and the downtown area.

From the moment I was greeted by those pink petunia baskets, I knew I was in the right place.

The baskets have come down for the season, signaling our shift into fall and the fun that comes with it, such as several events we've covered - Dixon's Scarecrow Fest, chili cookoffs, football games in Sterling, Rock Falls and Dixon, volleyball matches and cross country meets.

This month also was eventful for local arts and entertainment. In late October, The Dixon Historic Theater was the site of a movie-viewing evening featuring "The Wizard of Oz" and "Poltergeist" at the conclusion of the Scarecrow Fest. Following that, two bands rounded out the night's festivities at The Dixon.

The Scarecrow Fest was the first of what will be many stories featured in The Scene, Shaw Media's new arts and entertainment section available in our print products and on our website. Each Thursday, subscribers can read five pages of entertainment stories and things-to-do features in our newspapers - The Gazette and The Telegraph.

There and at our website, readers can see what is happening both across the region and near their own backyards.

On a final note, I am sincerely enjoying my time with The Gazette and The Telegraph. The petunia baskets, the beautiful riverfront, and stories of giving, such as the donation made to cover renovations of the Dixon Memorial Arch, point to a welcoming community.

My goal is to have more feature stories in our pages about the people who make it such in the Sauk Valley - the volunteers, unsung heroes, and others whose contributions to the community should be recognized. If you know of someone you would like to see featured, send me an email at [email protected].

Thanks for subscribing!
Charlene Bielema,
Sauk Valley Media editor

City workers will take the petunia baskets down on Monday, October 9th. At 9:30 AM at the Oakwood Cemetery maintenance building, volunteers will clean out the baskets and prepare them for storage. If you can help, please bring gloves and small scissors (to cut the tape holding the hooks on the chains). Hope to see you there! Thanks to everyone involved for another great year!
