Kind and heart-warming words from the new Sauk Valley Media Editor. Welcome and thank you!
Good Morning Readers,
A little over three months ago, I headed into Dixon to be interviewed for the Sauk Valley Media editor position. While it was an exciting drive, I was more than a little nervous.
But as I drove over the Galena Avenue bridge and into downtown, those fears quickly evaporated.
I credit the petunias, the ones in the baskets adorning both bridges and the downtown area.
From the moment I was greeted by those pink petunia baskets, I knew I was in the right place.
The baskets have come down for the season, signaling our shift into fall and the fun that comes with it, such as several events we've covered - Dixon's Scarecrow Fest, chili cookoffs, football games in Sterling, Rock Falls and Dixon, volleyball matches and cross country meets.
This month also was eventful for local arts and entertainment. In late October, The Dixon Historic Theater was the site of a movie-viewing evening featuring "The Wizard of Oz" and "Poltergeist" at the conclusion of the Scarecrow Fest. Following that, two bands rounded out the night's festivities at The Dixon.
The Scarecrow Fest was the first of what will be many stories featured in The Scene, Shaw Media's new arts and entertainment section available in our print products and on our website. Each Thursday, subscribers can read five pages of entertainment stories and things-to-do features in our newspapers - The Gazette and The Telegraph.
There and at our website, readers can see what is happening both across the region and near their own backyards.
On a final note, I am sincerely enjoying my time with The Gazette and The Telegraph. The petunia baskets, the beautiful riverfront, and stories of giving, such as the donation made to cover renovations of the Dixon Memorial Arch, point to a welcoming community.
My goal is to have more feature stories in our pages about the people who make it such in the Sauk Valley - the volunteers, unsung heroes, and others whose contributions to the community should be recognized. If you know of someone you would like to see featured, send me an email at [email protected].
Thanks for subscribing!
Charlene Bielema,
Sauk Valley Media editor
