James Fulton Engstrom was born on Sept. 16, 2010, with a knot in his umbilical cord, and for 61 minutes he had no heartbeat. For months, as he clung to life in critical care, his family prayed for the intercession of Archbishop Fulton Sheen, his namesake. Three months later, an MRI showed that the baby’s brain was completely normal — a miraculous healing. In 2019, Pope Francis formally approved James’ healing as a miracle attributed to Sheen’s intercession, clearing the way for Sheen’s beatification.

Today the Church will celebrate the beatification of Archbishop Fulton Sheen in St. Louis. A member of the Knights of Columbus, Archbishop Sheen spoke at numerous K of C events and collaborated with the Order in Catholic educational and evangelization efforts. At the 88th Supreme Convention in Houston in 1970, he challenged his brother Knights “to rebuild a morally united nation,” and five years later, in Miami Beach, Florida, he encouraged them to keep Jesus at the center of their efforts to advance the kingdom of God on earth.

As a priest, professor, bishop and media personality, Archbishop Fulton Sheen engaged the rapidly changing and often turbulent culture of his day with clarity and wit. Today, his message of faith — broadcast around the world — remains a timely and urgent witness of hope.

“Which of the two did his father’s will?” — Matthew 21:31

In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells of two sons: one who says no but later obeys, and another who says yes but fails to act. His words remind us that faith is more than good intentions or the right words. What matters is our willingness to turn back to God and do His will.

God always leaves room for conversion. No matter how we have responded in the past, we can change our hearts, say yes today, and follow where He leads.

🙏 Lord, give us hearts ready to change, courage to put our faith into action, and the grace to do Your will each day.

Today, the Church celebrates the beatification of Blessed Fulton J. Sheen, a brother Knight whose extraordinary gift for communication brought the Gospel to millions.

Long before social media, podcasts and livestreams, Archbishop Sheen understood the power of media to bring the Catholic faith into everyday life. Through radio and television, he spoke about Christ with clarity, confidence and joy.

Sheen embodied the call to put faith into action and share it boldly with the world. Today, Knights everywhere rejoice to call him Blessed, joining our founder, Blessed Michael McGivney, among the holy men raised up by the Church as examples of faithful Christian life.

May his example inspire us to use the gifts God has given us, and never be afraid to speak to others about Jesus in our everyday circumstances.

Blessed Fulton J. Sheen and Blessed Michael McGivney, pray for us!
