Lost your records in a disaster? You can rebuild them. πŸ πŸ“„

Here's where to start:

πŸ’» Tax records β€” Log in to your IRS Individual Online Account to view, print, or download your transcript. Or order one by mail, call 800-908-9946 (allow 5–10 days), or file Form 4506-T.

🏦 Bank & credit card statements β€” Your bank or card issuer usually keeps past statements online.

πŸ“Έ Personal property β€” Photos, videos, canceled checks, and receipts help prove what your belongings were worth. Online price listings can help establish fair market value.

🏑 Real property β€’ Purchase documents β†’ title or escrow company, or your lender β€’ Home improvements β†’ the contractors who did the work β€’ Inherited property β†’ court probate records or the attorney who handled the trust β€’ No records at all β†’ check your county assessor's office

πŸš— Vehicles β€” Look up current fair market value online or at your library, or ask the dealer for a copy of your purchase contract.

πŸ“¬ If you're in a disaster area, your IRS Online Account may show personalized messages about extended filing and payment deadlines.

Save this for later. Share it with someone who needs it. πŸ’™

Estimated taxes aren’t just for the self-employed

Federal income tax works on a pay-as-you-go basis β€” it's paid as you earn or receive income, either through withholding from your paycheck or through estimated payments.

Most self-employed folks pay this way, but they're not the only ones.

If you get income from things like interest, dividends, capital gains, royalties, rents, alimony, or prizes and awards β€” and not enough is withheld β€” you may need to make estimated payments too.
As a general rule, if you expect to owe $1,000 or more when you file, it's time to look at estimated tax. That covers not just income tax, but also self-employment tax and the alternative minimum tax.

Your next payment is due Jan. 15, 2027.

Good news: paying is easy. You can pay online at IRS.gov/payments, through your IRS Individual Online Account (where you can also check your payment history), with Form 1040-ES by mail or phone, or through Direct Pay. Most people pay quarterly, but you're welcome to pay weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly β€” as long as you've paid enough by the end of each quarter.

One more reason not to put it off: if you didn't pay enough during the year, you may owe a penalty. The good news is the IRS will generally figure that penalty for you.

Want the details? Check out Publication 505, Tax Withholding and Estimated Tax.

Make payments, view your account or apply for a payment plan with the IRS.
