Copay vs. Coinsurance

Copay and coinsurance are not the same thing.

A copay is usually a fixed amount you pay for a covered service.

For example, you may pay $40 for a doctor’s visit.

Coinsurance is usually a percentage of the allowed cost.

For example, your plan may require you to pay 20% of the cost after meeting certain deductible requirements.

A health plan can include both.

Knowing the difference helps you understand what you may actually pay when you use your insurance.

What Is a Deductible?

Health insurance deductibles can be confusing, so let’s keep it simple.

Your deductible is generally the amount you may pay for covered healthcare services before your insurance starts sharing the cost.

But not every service works the same way. Some covered services may be available before you meet your deductible.

That’s why it’s important to understand what your deductible actually applies to before choosing a plan.

A low deductible sounds great, but it may also come with a higher monthly premium.

The right plan depends on how you expect to use your health insurance.

A low monthly premium doesn’t always mean a low-cost health plan.

Your premium is only one part of what you may pay. You should also look at your deductible, copays, coinsurance, and out of pocket maximum.

A plan that looks cheaper every month could end up costing you more when you actually need medical care.

Before choosing a plan, look at the full picture not just the monthly price.
