IMPORTANT to-do's for your home policy today.
Hurricane Isaias is approaching Florida’s Panhandle. While you prepare your home, take a few minutes to prepare your insurance records, too.
10 insurance-prep steps:
1. Photograph or video every room to inventory your belongings.
2. List item descriptions, brands, models, serial numbers, and purchase dates.
3. Save receipts and appraisals for valuable items.
4. Back up your inventory and policy documents off-site or to secure cloud storage.
5. Keep your declarations page, policy forms, insurer claims number, and agent contact information together.
6. Review your dwelling limit and recent upgrades with your agent when possible.
7. Check personal-property limits, special item limits, and replacement-cost vs. actual-cash-value settlement.
8. Find your hurricane or named-storm deductible and understand how it applies.
9. Ask what your policy says about wind, water intrusion, and flooding. Flood coverage is separate from standard homeowners insurance and may have a waiting period.
10. Review additional living expense coverage and how to report a claim.
Already under a binding restriction? Rules vary by insurer. Contact us, your current agent, or carrier to confirm what your carrier currently allows.
If you’re outside the storm’s immediate impact area, use this as a reminder to review coverage before a storm is approaching. Quotes, new policies, or changes depend on carrier restrictions and underwriting. Follow the National Hurricane Center and local officials for storm updates and safety instructions.
