Here is some useful information. One of the reasons why it costs so much to own a home in Florida is the property taxes. The Florida homestead exemption is a powerful tool that homeowners can use to reduce their property taxes.
If your property is your permanent home and you owned it on January 1 of the tax year, you are eligible for a $25,000 exemption on the first $50,000 of its assessed value in Florida. This exemption covers all taxes, including those levied by school districts. If your property's assessed value is between $50,000 and $75,000, an extra exemption of up to $25,000 will be applied. This exemption does not apply to taxes levied by school districts.
Before applying make sure you meet the following requirements:
• You are the property owner.
• The property you want to claim the exemption for must be your permanent residence.
• The property you want to claim should be the permanent residence of someone you can claim as a dependent on your taxes.
• You must have lived at the property on January 1 of the tax year in question. For instance, if you hope to claim the homestead exemption on your 2022 taxes, you must have lived at the property in question on January 1, 2022.
• You should not have rented the property for more than 30 days in a given calendar year. This is because renting the property for more than 30 days for two consecutive years or for more than six months is considered an abandonment of the Florida homestead exemption.
The Deadline to file is March 1, 2022. There is an online application to apply for your HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION in the county you live. You will need the following information to complete the online application (for all parties filing):
• Social Security Number
• Date of Birth
• Marital Status
• Florida Driver's license, Auto Registration and Voters Registration which reflects the property address
• U.S. Permanent Resident Immigration number (Non U. S. citizen)
