In response to a few frequently asked questions we’ve received the last couple of days, EMA wants to share our recommended method for receiving emergency alerts.
First, we recommend having MULTIPLE ways to receive alerts to ensure you don’t miss anything. To do that we suggest using a PACE (Primary, Alternate, Contingent, Emergency) Plan Strategy. An example of this is -
📻 Primary - Weather Radio
📱 Alternate - Subscribing to Morgan County EMA Alerts by texting “Join MorganCoAlerts” to 58339
🔔 Contingent - Ensuring others in your home have also signed up for alerts in case someone’s phone isn’t fully charged or breaks
🚨 Emergency - Outdoor Warning Sirens. These are intended only to alert you, while outside, that you need to go inside and seek shelter. These should never be relied on as a primary way to receive weather alerts.
A few other helpful reminders
✅ NWS Emergency Alerts and Outdoor Warning Sirens are initiated via a polygon shape file the NWS creates. Meaning, you will only get the emergency alert and the outdoor siren will only sound if you/it is located inside the warned area.
✅ When possible, EMA will begin posting information ahead of a known storm with preparedness tips. Be sure to keep an eye out on our page for this information.
✅ When overnight weather emergencies are possible, please also make sure you have a go bag and anything you may want to take into your shelter by your bed so you can quickly get to your safe location
✅ If you do sustain damage during a storm, please notify EMA so that we can help coordinate support and assistance to help you recover.
