As families settle into the new school routine, it’s a great time to remind students of a few simple ways to stay safe on their way to and from school. No matter how they’re traveling, these tips can help keep everyone protected.
Walking to school:
• Use sidewalks where available
• Cross at marked crosswalks
• Make eye contact with drivers before crossing
• Walk with a group when possible
Riding a bike:
• Always wear a properly fitted helmet
• Ride with traffic on the right side of the road
• Stop completely before crossing streets
• Choose routes with lighter traffic when possible
Taking the bus:
• Stand several feet back from the curb while waiting
• Wait for the bus to fully stop before boarding
• Avoid walking directly in front of or behind the bus without making eye contact with the driver
Getting dropped off:
• Follow school zone speed limits
• Stick to your school’s drop-off procedures
• Never pass a bus that’s loading or unloading kids
Teen drivers:
• Buckle up every passenger
• Put phones and devices away
• Follow posted speed limits
We hope these reminders help you and your family start the school year with confidence. If you ever have questions about auto insurance or how to make sure your coverage fits your needs, our team at Shield Insurance is always here to help.
