An "occurrence" policy covers claims for events that happen during the policy period, even if the claim is filed later.

On the other hand, a "claims-made" policy only covers claims that are both filed and reported during the policy period.

Ask which type you have. It matters.

"Named peril" vs. "open peril"—what's the actual difference?

- Named Peril: Covers only the specific risks listed in your policy (like fire or theft). If damage occurs, the burden of proof is on you to show the event was explicitly included.

- Open Peril: Covers all risks of physical loss by default, unless the specific cause is explicitly listed in your policy's exclusions.
