STORIES THAT BUILT DARLINGTON

Every town has its legends.

Darlington has one that's been shared for generations.

According to local tradition, when it came time to choose the location of the new county courthouse in 1785, Colonel Lamuel Benton and Captain Elias DuBose couldn't agree.

So they settled the matter in a way that has become one of Darlington's best-known stories.

Each man mounted his horse and rode toward the other.

Where they met became the heart of the town.

Whether every detail happened exactly this way, no one can say for certain. But for more than two centuries, this story has been part of Darlington's heritage, reminding us that every community begins with the people who shape it.

NEIGHBORS. | Nicole

For the past 13 years, Nicole has been one of the familiar faces behind the desk at Gibson's Tire & Exhaust.

When her husband passed away, she didn't close the doors.

She kept showing up.

Today, she continues serving the community they built together, helping neighbors with everything from tires and exhausts to the unexpected repairs that can bring a day to a stop.

When we asked Nicole what she hopes never changes about Darlington, her answer came without hesitation.

"Both races."

It's people like Nicole who remind us that a community isn't built by buildings.

It's built by the people who unlock the doors every morning.

DARLINGTON, THEN. | 1874

In 1874, a little book was published describing Darlington County and the place its people called home.

Darlington Court House was described as a village of somewhere between 900 and 1,000 people, sitting beneath what the writers called “shapely and majestic evergreen oaks.”

One hundred and fifty-two years later, we found ourselves wondering:
If you had to describe Darlington today in one sentence, what would you write?

DARLINGTON, THEN. | 1825

Two hundred years ago, this was home.

The roads changed. Towns grew. Names disappeared from maps, and new ones took their place.

But families still put down roots here. Neighbors still depended on neighbors. And this corner of South Carolina kept becoming itself.
