The markets this week focused on:
- better than expected jobless numbers on Thursday,
- Fed Chairman Powell reiterating tapering in November and added looking at rate hikes in June 2022 (if inflation is more than expected)
- FDA approval for Moderna booster in addition to Pfizer helped alleviate COVID fears
On that news, the stock markets and yields on rates moved higher.

Stocks rallied towards their upper ranges, with the DJIA (35,765) and S&P (4,559) setting new highs today.

The Fed Beige book (https://www.federalreserve.gov/monetarypolicy/beigebook202110.htm for October showed a over-heated residential housing market cooling off: “Residential real estate activity was unchanged or slowed slightly but the market remained healthy, overall.”

The bellwether 10-year T-Note moved slightly higher again to a high of 1.702 % today, getting near this year’s high of 1.778% set on 3/31/2021.

The mortgages followed the T-note, but were still tempered by the Treasury buying Agency MBSs at the same pace (as they still have not started to taper). The Freddie Mac Weekly Market survey for 30-year fixed mortgages rose to 3.09% at a price of 99.30, also slightly below this year’s high set appropriately on 4/1/2021 at 3.18%.
Please remind your customers, that November is coming soon and the mortgage rates will be more volatile without tapering, making mortgage rates much more likely to go up, not down. Translation, lock now, not later.

Next week the markets will be focused on housing related numbers and 3rd quarter GDP numbers, as well as, a whooping $353 billion in Treasury Bill and Note auctions.

Have a great weekend and celebrate the rain coming to California to end this year’s fire season.
