Consumers are being targeted by a growing phone scam in which fraudsters impersonate financial institutions using caller ID “spoofing” technology. In many cases, the incoming number appears to match the official phone number of the financial institution. The caller may claim fraudulent activity has been detected on your account and insist that immediate action is necessary to secure your funds. Victims are often instructed to provide sensitive banking information, authentication codes, or digital banking credentials. In some cases, scammers convince individuals to transfer funds to another account under the false claim that it will keep their money safe.
Helpful Tips to Avoid This Type of Scam:
✅A Familiar Number Doesn’t Mean It’s Legitimate - Scammers can make calls appear as though they’re coming from trusted organizations.
✅When in Doubt, Hang Up and Call Back - Use the official number from your card, mobile app, or website to confirm whether the call was real.
✅Don’t Send Money to “Protect” Your Account - Requests to wire money, send Zelle payments, buy gift cards, deposit to cryptocurrency, or move funds are major red flags.
✅Protect Your Personal Information- Your passwords, account credentials, and security codes should never be shared with anyone over the phone.
✅Don’t Let Anyone Rush You- Fraudsters often create a sense of urgency to prevent you from stopping to verify the situation.
What makes these scams so convincing is the combination of pressure and perceived authority. Fraudsters may already know some of your personal information, which can make the call feel real. Once trust is established, scammers often act fast, convincing victims to move money or share account access information before they have time to think it through.
