October is Fire Prevention Month, and it’s an important reminder that protecting your home and family starts long before an emergency ever happens. With home structure fires reported every 96 seconds in the U.S., we believe prevention and preparation are essential.
Our team at Hadley Insurance is sharing a few simple but impactful safety steps to review this season:
• Understand the leading causes. Cooking and heating equipment remain the top sources of home fires. Never leave cooking unattended, keep space around heat sources clear, and check electrical cords for wear.
• Test your smoke alarms. Make sure they work each month, replace batteries once a year, and swap out any device that’s 10 years old or older.
• Review your escape plan. Identify two exits for every room, ensure windows and doors open easily, and choose a safe meeting spot outside.
• Know how to use a fire extinguisher. Remember PASS: Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep. If you’re unsure or the fire is spreading, get out and call 911.
• Practice safer habits daily. Stay near heaters and fireplaces when in use, keep matches and lighters secured, avoid overloaded outlets, and turn off appliances before bed or leaving home.
Fire prevention is something we all play a part in. If you have questions about home safety, your local fire department is a great resource.
