The most common homebuying myth is that you need 20% as a down payment.

This couldn’t be further from the truth!

The minimum down payment for a first time buyer using conventional financing is 3%. The minimum for a second time buyer using conventional financing is 5%. The minimum down payment for FHA financing is 3.5%. There are even some VA programs where you don’t need a down payment at all!

Did you know the average down payment for first time buyers is just 6%?!?! The average down payment for repeat buyers is only 13%!!

There are certainly perks to putting 20% down like not having to pay PMI (private mortgage insurance) but putting down 20% is not mandatory on most home purchases.
