Earth Day Myth vs. Fact 🌎🥩

Myth: Cattle compete directly with people for food.
Fact: Cattle are natural upcyclers – they convert grasses and other plants humans can’t digest into high-quality protein. They also utilize byproducts from the human food system, such as fruit and vegetable pulp or other processing leftovers, that might otherwise go to waste. By transforming human-inedible plants and food byproducts into nutrient-dense food, cattle play a unique role in making use of available resources. (1)

Sustainability conversations are complex – and on Earth Day, it’s worth recognizing the full picture of how food systems work. 🌱

Baber, J.R. et al., 2018. Estimation of human-edible protein conversion efficiency, net protein contribution, and enteric methane production from beef production from beef production in the United States. Trans. Anim. Sci. 2(4): 439-50.

USDA's Livestock Forage Program (LFP), administered by the Farm Service Agency, provides financial support to eligible livestock producers to compensate for lost grazing opportunities and to help cover additional feed costs incurred due to qualifying drought. To participate in LFP, grazing acres must be certified with your local FSA office by July 15, 2026.

It’s Tennessee FFA Convention Week, and we are proud to celebrate the next generation of agricultural leaders.

As the average age of U.S. farmers continues to rise, programs like 4-H and FFA play a vital role in shaping the future of agriculture. Tennessee State 4-H Council President Alex Snodgrass and Tennessee FFA State President Weston Brown recently joined RFD-TV to share how these organizations are building leadership, life skills, and real-world experience for young people across our state.

Different jackets. Same mission.

Their message is simple. Get involved. Step up. Make an impact.

Watch their full Summit interview and see how Tennessee youth are leading the way.

New data shows that farmers’ share of the money consumers spend on food continues to shrink, even as expenses rise. The latest Market Intel from Farm Bureau economists shows that in 2024 farmers and ranchers received a combined 5.8 cents of every food dollar after accounting for expenses, down from 5.9 cents in 2023. 📰 https://bit.ly/4rQJ5zU

🥩 NEWS FROM THE USDA: If you see this logo on your meat, poultry, or egg products—it means the animal was born, raised, harvested, and processed in America. Foreign producers can no longer take advantage of loopholes and falsify where their products are coming from.

The “Product of USA” label is a voluntary claim that may be used only on meat, poultry, and egg products derived from animals born, raised, harvested, and processed in the United States. Use of the label must accurately reflect product origin and must not be false or misleading.

All messaging and graphics must support clear, truthful consumer understanding and must not imply claims beyond the defined standard. Producers are responsible for maintaining documentation to support the claim, and all usage must remain consistent with USDA requirements.
