Checking sump pump: To ensure the pump is working correctly, periodically trigger it to turn on by dumping a bucket of water in the sump pit. Clean any debris out of your sump pit that could potentially clog the pump. If your pump has an external float, make sure that it is free of any obstructions that might stop the switch from triggering. Lastly, Check all of the plumbing connections to make sure that there aren’t any leaks.

Remember to include outbuildings, decks, swing sets, unattached equipment and seasonal items like snow blowers, lawn furniture and grills. Group smaller items, like 10 pairs of shoes or 100 books, and estimate the cost for each grouping. Make copies of your inventory and store each copy in a different location such as a safe deposit box, at work, or at a friend’s house.

Do one room at a time. If you feel overwhelmed, focus on the most valuable items – like those $100 and higher – the first time through. Save lower-value items for another date. It’s better to have a brief inventory than no record at all.

There are several ways to create a home inventory. You can video tape and narrate, take photographs and make notes on the back of each, or write lists with detailed information. Include information like brand name, model, serial number, year and price.
