In 1921, Adolph Zukor was the president of Paramount Pictures, which had become the most powerful film studio in the world, and was involved in a major antitrust case regarding its monopolistic practices in the motion picture industry. He was also involved in the business of making films, such as a correspondence with Harry Houdini about Houdini's 1921 film, The Man From Beyond, and directing director Cecil B. DeMille to make the film Manslaughter.
Paramount Pictures dominance: By 1921, Zukor's Paramount company was the most powerful and profitable film making and distribution company in the world, a position he solidified with his strategy of acquiring theatres to guarantee exhibition of his films.
Antitrust investigation: The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) filed a complaint against Famous Players-Lasky Corporation (which became Paramount), alleging that Zukor and Jesse L. Lasky had conspired to monopolize the motion picture industry.
Film production: Zukor was actively involved in the production side of the business. In 1921, he sent a letter to Cecil B. DeMille asking him to direct the film Manslaughter.
Collaboration with Houdini: Zukor was the head of Famous Players-Lasky and was a key figure in the distribution of Houdini's films. In 1921, he was also involved in discussions with Houdini about Houdini's first independently produced feature film, The Man From Beyond.
