Week in review (11/7/25)

The private sector added 42,000 jobs in October according to ADP, marking a small rebound after two months of losses. Still, overall job growth remains modest – only 10,000 jobs have been added over the past three months in total.
This ADP report carries extra importance since the federal shutdown has delayed the government’s official employment data for September and October. That means the Federal Reserve is relying more on private reports like ADP’s as it weighs future rate decisions.

The Fed continues to walk a fine line – working to lower inflation while keeping the labor market stable. Chair Jerome Powell recently noted there’s “no risk-free path” ahead and emphasized that a rate cut at the December 10 meeting is far from guaranteed.

For now, October’s job figures from ADP likely don’t shift the Fed’s stance – the data isn’t strong enough to rule out cuts, but not weak enough to require them either.

Just as a reminder: when the Fed adjusts rates, it changes the Federal Funds Rate, which is what banks charge each other for short-term loans. That doesn’t directly set mortgage rates, but it does influence them, along with other economic factors.
In housing, Cotality’s latest report shows home values slipped 0.2% in September, but remain 1.2% higher than a year ago. Looking ahead, Cotality expects prices to rise 4.1% over the next year, supported by lower rates and strong buyer demand.
Real estate continues to be one of the most reliable ways to build wealth. For example, a $500,000 home appreciating at 4% annually gains $20,000 in a year – a great reminder of the power of homeownership.
