This spring, norovirus spread through a cruise ship fast enough to sicken more than 100 passengers and crew before the ship even reached port. Most cases pass on their own in a day or two. Some don't, and a ship's medical bay isn't built for the ones that don't. If you need to be evacuated to real care, that can run $15,000 for a helicopter lift to over $100,000 for a longer trip home, depending on how far you are from land. Travel medical coverage is what stands between a bad few days and a bill like that.

Many small business owners assume workers' comp is only for bigger operations. In Texas it's actually optional for private employers, which surprises people, but that doesn't mean it's optional in practice. One injury without coverage can mean paying medical bills and lost wages straight out of your own pocket. If you've got even one employee on payroll, it's worth a real conversation about whether you're protected.

In Texas, roughly 1 in 5 drivers on the road carries no insurance at all, and plenty more carry only the state minimum. If one of them hits you, their coverage may not come close to covering your medical bills or your car. Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage is what closes that gap, and it's often one of the cheapest add-ons on a policy. It's worth checking whether yours actually has it, and how much.

None of these are automatic, and most travelers assume at least one of them is. Emergency care abroad, evacuation if you need it, reimbursement if the trip gets cut short, and the waivers that protect a pre-existing condition or let you cancel for any reason. Evacuation alone can run $15,000 to over $100,000 without coverage in place. Both the medical side and the trip protection side are online quotes now, not a phone call you have to schedule.

You carry insurance. You stop at the light. You do everything you're supposed to do. The driver who hits you might not. That's where uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage can become important. It's designed to help protect you when the person responsible doesn't have enough insurance, or has none at all, subject to your policy's terms and coverage.
