Getting pre-qualified is the first step. It gives you an idea of how large a loan you'll likely qualify for. The amount is not a sure-thing for the amount supplied, because it's based on information you give to the lender.

Pre-approval is the next step, and it's a conditional commitment to actually approve your loan. In this stage, you complete an official mortgage application to get pre-approved and give the lender all the necessary documentation.
