Remember the deadline everyone was planning around, the one that was going to cut how much you could leave your family free of tax roughly in half starting this year?
It never happened. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act, signed into law on July 4, 2025, removed the expiration date and set a new number going forward.
For 2026, that number is $15 million per person, or up to $30 million for a married couple if the surviving spouse makes the portability election. Starting next year it adjusts for inflation.
If you made big moves to beat the old deadline, that planning is probably still working for you, just for different reasons than the calendar.
If you never got around to it, the federal number is a lot higher than most people think. That's only one piece of a plan, though.
Either way, the stuff that matters most for most families hasn't changed a bit: who's listed as your beneficiaries, how your assets are titled, and whether your estate documents still say what you actually want.
Those are the things that could quietly go wrong.
If nobody's looked at your plan in a few years, now's a good time.
