What can you actually change during Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period?

From October 15 through December 7, people with Medicare can make changes to their Medicare health and prescription drug coverage for the coming year. Those changes generally take effect January 1.

During AEP, you may be able to:
- switch from one Medicare Advantage plan to another
- move from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan
- leave a Medicare Advantage plan and return to Original Medicare
- join, switch, or drop a Medicare prescription drug plan
- keep your current coverage exactly as it is if it still works for you

And that last one matters. AEP does not mean you have to change plans. It simply gives you the opportunity to review what you have, see what is changing for next year, and decide whether your current coverage still fits your doctors, prescriptions, budget, and priorities. Medicare recommends reviewing your coverage each year because plan costs and benefits can change.

Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period is open.
From October 15 through December 7, people with Medicare can review their current Medicare Advantage and prescription drug coverage and make changes for 2027 if needed. Turning 65? You do NOT have to wait for AEP.
If you were born July through December 1961, or January 1962, you may be in your Medicare Initial Enrollment Period right now.
Your Initial Enrollment Period is your own personal 7-month Medicare window. It begins 3 months before the month you turn 65, includes your birthday month, and continues for 3 months afterward. Medicare
And this part trips people up every year:
AEP is not the only time you can enroll in Medicare.
If you’re turning 65, you have your own enrollment period based on your birthday.
If you enroll before your birthday month, Medicare Part B generally begins on the first day of the month you turn 65. If your birthday is on the first of the month, Medicare generally treats the previous month as your Medicare start month. Medicare
So if you’ve been thinking, “I guess I have to wait until October 15,” you may not.

Chris has a love-hate relationship with Cruisin’ the Coast. He loves what it brings to our local businesses, but after 25 years in law enforcement, he also remembers the traffic, accidents, stalled vehicles, and all the work that goes into keeping such a wonderful event running smoothly.
When we planned our wedding 28 years ago, Cruisin’ the Coast was still pretty new. We had no idea what it would become, or that we’d scheduled our anniversary right in the middle of it. 😂 Year after year, Chris was usually working while I was celebrating our anniversary. Retirement finally relieved him of that scheduling conflict…and the husband guilt that came with it!
This year brought something especially sweet: a reunion with friends John and Sherry, who came down from Indiana for the event. The last time we saw them was 28 years ago, when they came for our wedding!
John and Chris served together aboard the USS Crommelin in the early ’90s, and Chris spent about a year sleeping on John and Sherry’s couch. Apparently, their hospitality - and their couch - beat a bunk on the ship. 😂
Tonight, we got together again, along with Mike, another friend who served aboard the Crommelin. So many years had passed, but the stories and laughter came right back. Well most of the stories - the memory tends to lag a bit...
Old friends, Navy memories, and a little extra sweetness during our anniversary week. Let’s just make sure the next get-together doesn’t take another 28 years. ❤️

Have a Medicare prescription drug plan? Don’t put 2027 on autopilot.

There are changes coming to Medicare Part D for 2027, and this is one year I would not assume that your current drug plan will look or cost about the same next year.

You may also see a $41.33 Medicare Part D premium mentioned for 2027. That number is a federal calculation used to help determine plan premiums,it is not the monthly premium everyone will pay.

Your actual cost will depend on the plan available in your area, and the plan that worked well for you in 2026 may or may not still be the best fit for 2027.

That’s exactly what Annual Enrollment Period is for.

October 15 – December 7 is your opportunity to review your Medicare drug coverage for 2027.
