Houston Astros Open a 100% Free Hospital for the Homeless — Represented by José Altuve — “This Is the Legacy We Want to Leave Behind”

Representing the Houston Astros, José Altuve stood in the cool early morning air and quietly unlocked the Astros Sanctuary Medical Center — a 250-bed hospital providing completely free medical care, created to serve the homeless and the poor who often struggle to access healthcare.
The facility is designed to provide comprehensive medical services, including:
Cancer treatment wards
Trauma operating rooms
Mental health treatment wings
Addiction recovery and detox services
Full dental clinics
In addition, 120 permanent apartments are located on the upper floors of the building for patients who need stable housing while recovering from illness or surgery.
Every service is completely free.
The $142 million project was reportedly funded over 18 months, supported by the Houston Astros organization, charitable partners, private donors, and humanitarian foundations across the United States and beyond.
The first patient to walk through the doors was Thomas, a 61-year-old Navy veteran who had not seen a doctor in 14 years.
Altuve personally helped carry his bag into the building, then knelt beside him and said:
“This hospital carries our name not to honor a team, but to remind us that no one should be forgotten. Here, every person will be welcomed with dignity and love. This is the legacy we want to leave behind — not championships, but compassion and hope.”
By midday, the line of people seeking medical care reportedly stretched for several city blocks, revealing the enormous need for accessible healthcare among vulnerable and homeless communities.
