It’s Misconception Monday. Today’s myth: “No-Fault” homeowners’ insurance 🏠
“No-fault” is a term you’ll hear a lot with auto insurance (it’s about how certain injury/medical payments are handled after a car accident). With homeowners' insurance, it doesn’t work that way exactly.
Most home incidents aren’t something you caused on purpose (wind, hail, theft, a pipe bursting, etc.). But here’s the key: even if it wasn’t your “fault,” it’s still your home.
The better way to think about home insurance is:
- What causes are covered (fire, wind, hail, theft, etc.)
- What maintenance/prevention is expected (to reduce avoidable losses)
A few simple ways to lower your risk:
❌ Don’t leave candles unattended
✅ Use a security system or smart cameras
✅ Keep the heat consistent in freezing temps to help prevent frozen pipes
✅ After heavy snow, safely clear buildup if needed (or hire it out)
