As we conclude the semester, I am filled with incredible pride for my students at Lone Star College-Houston North, particularly those in the Victory Early College program. In my General Psychology course, I challenge my students to deliver presentations to their peers, showcasing their learning and how they plan to apply it in their lives. This week's presentations have been nothing short of impressive – professional, informative, and deeply moving. I say "moving" because many students come from difficult and disadvantaged backgrounds. However, if you had met them, you would never have known it. They are happy, energetic, and eager to learn. Once they gain confidence in their abilities and understand that true intelligence is more than an SAT score, the sky is the limit!
To be candid, I initially embarked on this journey to become an Adjunct Professor of Psychology at LSC with the intention of eventually transitioning to a larger university. However, this class has reminded me of why I love to teach. The connections I've forged with the students, as well as the amazing administration and staff at LSC, have made it incredibly difficult to entertain the thought of leaving.
For those who may be unfamiliar, Victory Early College High School is a unique collaboration between the Aldine Independent School District and Lone Star Community College. This innovative partnership creates an educational environment that seamlessly integrates high school and college programs. At Victory Early College, students benefit from limited campus enrollment, small class sizes, and a nurturing, personalized learning setting. Situated at the Lone Star College – Victory Center Campus, Victory offers students the opportunity to earn a high school diploma and an Associate’s of Arts Degree, or accumulate two years of college credit toward a Baccalaureate Degree. It's truly inspiring to witness the remarkable achievements of these dedicated students.
