The very first insurance contract was signed in 1347...while I am not quite that old I wrote the first policy of my career in 1982. Another FUN FACT, my Dad, Richard Sutter Sr. got me started in the business! I guess you can say INSURANCE is a FAMILY business, a legacy now spanning 80 years between the two of us!

Although the concept of insurance can be traced back to ancient civilizations, the first known insurance contract was signed in 1347 in Genoa, Italy.

Separate insurance contracts, or insurance policies not bundled with loans or other kinds of contracts, were invented in Genoa in the 14th century, along with insurance pools backed by pledges of landed estates.

TACO TUESDAY FUN FACT: Taco Bell once purchased taco insurance.

When the Mir space station was intended to crash somewhere in the South Pacific Ocean in 2001, fast-food chain Taco Bell promised to provide everyone in America a free taco if the space station crashed within a tiny designated perimeter in the Pacific Ocean.

Ultimately, Mir did not hit the target. If it had, Taco Bell would have been down almost $280 million dollars.

Just in case Mir did hit the target, the restaurant chain purchased a taco insurance policy to cover the risks!

MOTORCYCLE SAFETY AWARENESS MONTH

May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. With warmer weather, it’s time to remind everyone to be on the alert and to share the road with motorcyclists.

Riders who have been cooped up all winter are excited to be out on the road again, but that shouldn’t stop them from using caution.

Both motorcyclists and motorists need to be aware of their surroundings. Checking blind spots, mirrors and using turn signals are necessary when changing lanes and when passing.

Distracted driving has been on the rise, too. Distractions during driving could mean the difference between seeing a motorcyclist or not when preparing to change lanes. Don’t let one text change anyone’s life forever!

Riders need to take precautions as well. Take a defensive driving course, wear protective gear and keep your bike in its best working condition. Also, be aware of any road hazards and dangerous weather conditions.

Most of all, enjoy your ride and make it home again (and, if by chance you need to insure your ride...give me a call!)

NATIONAL PAPER AIRPLANE DAY

On May 26th each year, National Paper Airplane Day honors the simple aeronautical toy that has been around for thousands of years!

National Paper Airplane Day provides an excuse to play! This inexpensive, healthy, and stimulating form of entertainment brings lots of joy, too. In other words, put down your smartphones and get outside for some primitive fun!

Did you know?

- The earliest known date of the creation of modern paper planes was said to have been 1909.
- The largest paper aircraft had a wingspan of 59.74 ft. Students and employees from Germany created it on 28th September 2013.
- Joe Ayoob recorded the longest distance flown by a paper airplane in February 2012. His plane flew 226 feet, 10 inches.
- The longest-lasting paper airplane flight flew 29.2 seconds.
