Joyce Dapper was a member of the Cumberland High School Arts Faculty from 1971-1981. Dapper created the school's "Project Talent," a dance program designed for students with a specific interest in dance. Dapper collaborated with teachers in the drama, music, art and industrial arts departments to create the "Artists in Residence Program". This program brought nationally prominent artists to CHS. It was under this program that the grand Clipper sculpture that adorns the outside of our school was created.
Students and residents may recall that Dapper vanished from her home in 1981. After days of searching, her body was discovered, a victim of a brutal murder.
The Cumberland High School auditorium was named in her honor. A scholarship fund was also created in her honor to benefit a senior student who planned to pursue higher education in the arts. Recipients are chosen based on a combination of talent, academic standing, and need for financial assistance.
The funds for the scholarship were depleted in the late 1990’s and the scholarship had not been awarded again until it was revived by Dan Pedro, a former school committee member. Pedro directs the Cumberland Band, a small group of volunteer musicians, from children to adult. It performs at least twice a year, at the Winter Wonderland Celebration, and in the Arnold Mills Fourth of July Parade. Proceeds of their performances contribute to the scholarship.
The mission of this page is to assist in keeping the Joyce M. Dapper Memorial Scholarship fund alive so it can continue to be awarded CHS’s students of the arts.
