If your student is moving away for school, handling their car insurance status properly can save you money—and major headaches down the road. Here is a quick refresher on how to handle them on your policy:

Taking a car to school? Keep them listed as a driver on your policy, and update their garage location address to their campus/dorm. Insurance rates depend on where the car is parked overnight!

Leaving the car at home? Keep them listed as an "Away at School" (or Resident Student) driver. You'll keep continuous coverage for when they come back to drive on breaks, and you might qualify for a Distant Student Discount if campus is more than 100 miles away!

A+ Student? Don't forget the Good Student Discount! Most carriers offer savings for students maintaining a 3.0 GPA or higher.

The McHenry County Referral Partners Chapter of AmSpirit Business Connections welcomed Catherine Fischer, Chief Strategy Officer of Summit Advisors Group, as this week’s headline speaker. Catherine delivered a practical and engaging presentation focused on helping business owners make smarter financial decisions through strategic planning, tax efficiency, and long-term forecasting.

Rather than simply discussing tax preparation, Catherine challenged attendees to adopt a strategic mindset—making proactive decisions throughout the year instead of waiting until tax season. She emphasized that every business owner should understand two critical numbers: cash flow and forecasting, because these metrics drive informed decisions and sustainable growth.

Catherine shared valuable insights on selecting the appropriate business structure, including when an S Corporation may provide tax advantages. She explained the differences between business mileage reimbursement versus company-owned vehicles, discussed how payroll can become a tax-saving strategy, and encouraged business owners to think carefully about insurance structures and other opportunities to legally reduce tax liability.

She also encouraged attendees to begin asking important year-end questions before December 31:

* Should I purchase equipment before year-end?
* Can those purchases be expensed or depreciated?
* How will those decisions affect my taxable income?
* What adjustments can I make now to improve profitability next year?
