September is home to some truly remarkable moments in history. From breakthroughs in medicine to the furthest reaches of space, these are the kinds of milestones that remind us of what becomes possible when human ingenuity, courage, and determination come together.

Here are three we are celebrating this month:

🫀 September 2, 1952 - At the University of Minnesota, the University of Minnesota surgical team (Drs. F. John Lewis, C. Walton Lillehei, Mansur Taufic, and Richard Varco) performed the first successful open-heart surgery using a technique called hypothermia, often called “code chill” or “code cool,” to temporarily stop the heart's blood flow.

🚀 September 5, 1977 - NASA launched the Voyager 1 spacecraft, which has since become the most distant human-made object ever to travel through space. Onboard is the Golden Record, a carefully assembled message from Earth intended for any extraterrestrial life that may find it.

🏗️ September 30, 1935 - In the middle of the Great Depression, construction on the Hoover Dam commenced, a monumental feat of engineering that was finished two years ahead of schedule.
These moments continue to inspire us to think bigger, reach further, and never underestimate what is possible.

September 30th is a key sales closing date for many fall-seeded crops, including winter wheat, and it is also the annual sign-up deadline for margin protection on certain spring-seeded crops such as corn, soybeans, and spring wheat, where applicable.

By the sales closing date, producers may need to apply for coverage, make changes to existing coverage, review policy options, and confirm that their protection still aligns with their plans for the coming crop year.

Missing the applicable sales closing date can mean missing the opportunity to put the desired coverage in place for that crop year. That is especially important for producers who want to revisit coverage levels, look at risk-management options, or add tools like margin protection before the window closes.

This is a good time to review your crops, acreage plans, and current coverage choices, and to think through whether your operation has changed since last season.

Wildfire season is here, and ensuring that you and your loved ones are prepared is a crucial step. Beyond memorizing evacuation routes and packing a go-bag, reviewing your homeowners and auto insurance policies can be a key step to help prepare in case the worst were to happen.

That said, it’s a good idea to confirm that your homeowners or renters policy covers fire, smoke, and ash damage, and check your auto policy if you want coverage for your vehicle as well, since that typically falls under a comprehensive auto policy rather than homeowners coverage.

Additionally, look at your additional living expenses limits and ask yourself honestly whether they would cover your costs if you were displaced for several weeks or longer.
