A lot of people don't know this but...

The high cost of drugs accounts for about 30% of our health insurance premiums in the US. It is one of the driving factors to the high premiums we pay in the US.

For the first time ever, the US government is negotiating with drug companies on prices for Medicare and Medicaid. We don't know if at this time this will move over to traditional health insurance. We hope that if the drug companies are willing to sell their drugs for less in America - to government insurance, that this would open up the door for people who have group or individual commercial insurance.

The drug companies are not happy about this by the way, they are filing law suits left and right. We have included the story in the comments.

Just to put it into perspective on how big of an issue this is: the semaglutide drugs that are being sold in the US for about $1,000 a month (you know the ones) are being sold by the same drug companies in the UK and Germany for under $300 in most cases.

Health Insurance companies must pay out 80% of the premium they take in to claims. If they end up doing better on claims than expected then a rebate will occur.

If you had an individual Blue Cross plan or Large Group plan in 2022, you may be getting a rebate this year.

You will receive a letter in the next few weeks if you are in this category.

There is a new Alzheimer's drug that just made full FDA approval yesterday. Until now, there has been no effective treatment for this disease. This treatment is still not as advanced as we need it to be, but it is a step in the right direction. I would expect the treatments and effectiveness to improve as time goes on and things become more refined. Here is a link to the article:

The F.D.A. gave full approval to the drug, but added a black-box warning about safety risks. Medicare said it would cover most of the high cost.

Essential Health Benefits are a set of 10 categories of services health insurance plans must cover under the Affordable Care Act. These include doctors’ services, inpatient and outpatient hospital care, prescription drug coverage, pregnancy and childbirth, mental health services, and more. Some plans cover more services.

Health Savings Accounts allow you to set aside money to pay for qualified health expenses in pre-tax dollars. To be eligible to set up this type of savings account, you must be in a qualified high deductible, medical insurance plan. The good news is that unused funds can be invested and carried forward to future years. These funds can then be used to augment your retirement plan.
