On this day, we remember Samuel Wilson, the Troy, New York meat packer whose barrels stamped “U.S.” during the War of 1812 helped give America its most enduring nickname: Uncle Sam. Marking 172 years since his passing, Wilson’s quiet craft—supplying salted beef to feed soldiers—became legend when troops and townsfolk joked that the “U.S.” stood for “Uncle Sam,” the kindly local contractor. The name stuck, then spread.

Wilson’s life was more than a moniker. A Revolutionary-era transplant to upstate New York, he built a business in a booming canal town and became a civic figure known for fair dealing. A detail many miss: the federal contract that made him famous was originally secured through a partnership with his brother and another firm—Wilson’s name and reliability turned the bureaucratic initials into a human story.

While the bearded, stern Uncle Sam image evolved decades later—most famously in James Montgomery Flagg’s 1917 recruiting poster—the character’s roots trace back to Wilson’s barrels and a nation learning to see itself. His legacy endures every time “Uncle Sam” stands in for the United States.
