With the wet weather lately, we have been getting questions on prevent plant. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to give me a call.

Q: What is prevent plant?
A: Prevent plant provides coverage when farmers are unable to plant crops due to natural disasters or adverse weather conditions. It compensates for a portion of the insured value of the crop. Factors such as the type of crop and historical yields influence the coverage amount. Farmers must notify their insurance agent within a specified timeframe to qualify for prevent plant coverage.

Other prevent plant facts:

• A crop must have been planted, insured and harvested at least 1 out of the last 4 years to qualify.

• Qualifying acres will be based on the last 4 years of planting for that crop. Any planted acres of that crop will be deducted from your total available.

• You may plant a cover crop on prevent plant ground and still be eligible for a full prevent plant payment. (You may hay, graze, or cut the cover crop for silage, haylage, or baleage and your prevented planting payment will not be affected) Rules vary so I recommend contacting your agent for accepted cover crops and rules.

• 20/20 rule. The unit must have 20 acres or 20% of the unit acres affected to qualify for prevent plant.
