Medicare scams can sound convincing—but a few red flags can help you spot them.

🚩 Be cautious if someone contacts you unexpectedly and asks for your Medicare number, Social Security number, bank information, or payment for a “new” Medicare card.

🚩 Don’t trust caller ID alone. Scammers can make a call look like it’s coming from Medicare.

🚩 Be wary of pressure to act immediately, promises of free equipment, or offer benefits that your plan does not have, which may negatively affect your current benefits.

Medicare does not call, text, email, or show up uninvited to sell you something or demand personal information. If you’re unsure, hang up and call 1-800-MEDICARE directly.

Review your Medicare statements, protect your card like a credit card, and don’t be afraid to ask questions.

Medicare Annual Enrollment begins October 15, and one important document can help you prepare: your Annual Notice of Change (ANOC).

If you have a Medicare Advantage or Part D prescription drug plan, your ANOC should arrive by September 30. It explains changes that may take effect January 1, including:

• Monthly premiums, deductibles, copays, and other costs
• Prescription drug coverage and formularies
• Doctor, hospital, and pharmacy networks
• Extra benefits included with your plan
