**St. Tammany Sheriff Beefs Up DWI Patrols and Checkpoints over Labor Day Weekend**
Some love 'em. Some hate 'em. Either way, Sheriff Randy Smith is giving you the "heads up" that deputies with the STPSO will be conducting two DWI checkpoints over the Labor Day weekend in St. Tammany Parish. There will be no excuse for drinking and driving!! Get a designated driver, AKA: DD.
Some have asked over the last several weeks as to why we announce checkpoints. The answer is simple. Our goal is to PREVENT drinking and driving, and to hopefully NOT make any DWI arrests!! Regardless of some conspiracy theorist out there, we are not doing this to generate revenue by making arrests and writing tickets. We are doing this in hopes that this announcement will make people think twice before getting behind the wheel of a vehicle to drive impaired. If we save one life this weekend, it will be worth it. It could be you or your loved one's life that is saved!
The checkpoints will be conducted at undisclosed locations throughout St. Tammany Parish over the weekend. The checkpoints will be manned by deputies from the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office as an ongoing, proactive campaign named “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over”. In addition to the checkpoint, STPSO will also be conducting DWI patrols throughout St. Tammany Parish.
Sheriff Randy Smith says, “We encourage everyone to make wise choices, not just this weekend, but all the time. If you choose to consume alcohol, don’t drive. Have a designated driver or call a cab. If all else fails, call us. We will find you a safe ride home.”
The manpower for the checkpoints and extra patrols are funded by a grant from the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission.
