Truth Two: Not everyone is automatically enrolled.

If you are receiving Social Security retirement benefits or Railroad Retirement benefits at age 65, you’ll generally be enrolled in Medicare Part A automatically. But if you are not, you’ll need to sign up during your specific enrollment period to avoid gaps in coverage.

It’s also important to know that Medicare Part D, which covers prescription drugs, is never automatic—you must choose and enroll in a plan that fits your needs.

It’s a common misconception that Medicare doesn’t cost anything. While Parts A & B cover medically necessary services like hospital visits, doctor visits and outpatient care, they still carry a monthly premium.
