‼️DON'T BE A VICTIM OF A CHECK CASHING SCAM!‼️
Checking cashing scams often involve fake checks received through online sales, job offers, or government imposter scams. Common methods include "check washing" to alter legitimate checks, and scammers asking you to deposit a larger-than-needed check and wire back the difference before the fake check bounces. Scammers may also use mobile banking apps to quickly cash fraudulent checks using downloadable templates, a phenomenon know as the "Check Fraud Challenge". Be wary of high-pressure tactics, requests for immediate payment (cash, gift cards, or cryptocurrency), and instructions to send money back to the "sender".
How to Protect Yourself
• Be suspicious of large checks: If a buyer sends a check for more than the agreed price and asks for the difference back, it's a classic scam.
• Verify check authenticity: If you receive a check you weren't expecting, contact the issuing bank directly using a phone number from their official website (not the number on the check).
• Don't rush to spend the money: Wait for the check to fully clear your bank before spending any of the funds, as it may take weeks to discover it's fake.
• Go digital: Use direct deposit and online banking instead of paper checks to reduce your risk.
• Be careful with mobile banking: Don't scan QR codes from unexpected items or send money via Zelle® or other apps when instructed to do so in response to a suspicious check.
• Guard your personal information: Never give your online banking login, passwords, or verification codes to someone who contacts you unexpectedly.
• Use high-security checks: If you musts use physical checks, invest in high-security check stock with features like watermarks and microprint.
What to Do If You're a Victim
• Contact your bank immediately: Inform your financial institution about the fraudulent deposit.
• Report the scam: File a complain with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at reportfraud.ftc.gov and the FBI's Internet Crime Complain Center (IC3) at ic3.gov.
• Report to local police: Contact your local law enforcement to report the fraud.
