Let me give you a real example of what I actually found for a client recently.

They had a bookkeeper handling their day-to-day records and an accounting firm managing their taxes and filings. Everything seemed fine on the surface — nobody was raising red flags. But when I came in and started reviewing their financials more strategically, I noticed their sales tax calculations were off.

What made it frustrating was that all the information was right there. The records clearly showed which invoices were taxable and which were exempt. The accounting firm just wasn’t applying it correctly through their system, and it had been going on for a while.

So I dug in, documented everything, and filed amended returns on their behalf. Four weeks to identify and build the case, and about eight weeks later the state sent them a check for over $180,000 — money they had already collected from their customers and overpaid to the state.

Nobody on their existing team was doing anything malicious. But there was no one whose job it was to step back and look at the whole picture. That’s what I do — I’m not here to replace your bookkeeper or your CPA, I’m the person asking the questions they aren’t positioned to ask.

And in this case, those questions were worth over $180,000.
