Most people measure retirement readiness by how much they've accumulated.
But here's what that number doesn't tell you.
At a 4% annual withdrawal rate, $600,000 generates an initial $24,000 a year, or $2,000 a month, before taxes.
Now imagine two retirees with identical savings.
One withdraws from a traditional IRA, where distributions are generally taxable.
The other has access to qualified tax-free withdrawals.
Same $600,000. Different after-tax income.
And that's before considering inflation, withdrawal timing, and whether those savings can support 30 years of retirement.
