Don't make this critical life insurance mistake
I had a client tell me that she needed to buy a life insurance policy for herself, but her husband didn't need one because he was covered at work.
This is a dangerous situation. First of all can you imagine having a family that relies on your primary income and you don't have life insurance? That would be a recipe for disaster.
Now lets talk about that company life insurance group policy that so many people rely on...
First of all, it is a benefit that your company does not have to offer you. They can take it away from you just as quickly as they offered it to you, should business take a bad turn.
If you get laid off or find a better job that doesn't offer any life insurance (or only a token amount), you would find yourself uninsured. To illustrate my point, think of all the people that lost their jobs due to COVID. How many of those people lost their company issued life insurance due to COVID, and what a BAD TIME to lose it!
When you retire, guess what, you lose your insurance. Do you see a pattern building here?
Let's say you lose it for one of the above reasons. No biggie right? You'll just go get a term policy at that point, right? Well maybe... but what if while you were working for your company with all those great benefits, your health took a bad turn, like cancer, stroke, a heart attack or diabetes. Now, should you lose your policy at work for one of the above-mentioned situations, you no longer qualify for a personal life insurance policy. You now have NO life insurance in force.
Why not avoid all that doom and gloom and just purchase a term policy on the open market that you have COMPLETE CONTROL of. That's the safe move. And oh by the way... if your company wants to also offer you a dirt cheap group life insurance option at work, it may make sense to accept it, but the bulk of your coverage should always be 100% under YOUR CONTROL.
