Good morning, South Texas! Let's kick off the week by clearing up some common questions about Medicare. Today, we're diving into Medicare Advantage (Part C) and how it compares to Original Medicare.

Many folks turning 65 or already on Medicare wonder about their options. Original Medicare, managed by the federal government, includes Part A (hospital insurance) and Part B (medical insurance). You can add a separate Part D plan for prescription drugs and a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan to help with out-of-pocket costs.

Medicare Advantage plans, on the other hand, are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. These plans bundle your Part A and Part B benefits, and often include Part D (prescription drug coverage) all in one plan. A big difference is that many Medicare Advantage plans also offer extra benefits that Original Medicare doesn't cover, such as dental, vision, hearing, and even fitness memberships.

While Original Medicare allows you to see any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare nationwide, Medicare Advantage plans often work with a network of providers. This can mean different costs and coverage rules depending on the plan you choose and where you live. For most people, your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) is a crucial 7-month window. It begins 3 months before your 65th birthday month, includes your birthday month, and ends 3 months after your birthday month. Missing this window could mean a delay in coverage and even late enrollment penalties that could last a lifetime.

Medicare Part A helps cover hospital stays, skilled nursing, and hospice care. Most individuals don't pay a monthly premium for Part A. Medicare Part B assists with doctor visits, outpatient care, and preventive services, and does have a standard monthly premium.

It’s important to understand that Original Medicare (Part A & B) alone has gaps, like no out-of-pocket maximum and no routine dental, vision, or hearing coverage.
