On October 17th, Providence Wealth Planning supported the Inland Empire Light the Night event, walking alongside survivors, supporters, and those honoring the memory of loved ones. Our very own Joel Kessler's family was featured onstage, with his wife T'Ann giving a heartfelt testimony of their family's experience. It was an honor to participate alongside so many people who shared their stories and rallied to support each other.

We continue to be impressed by the efforts of our Blood Cancer United partners in building a community and making every effort possible to treat and cure blood cancer.

Men, the message is clear. Check in on your health this month, both physical and mental. A checkup you've been putting off. A conversation you've been avoiding. Neither has to be a big production.

💡 What if scientists could use light to switch specific brain cells on and off?

That idea helped earn the 2026 Nobel Prize in Medicine for Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann, and Georg Nagel. Their work helped create the field of optogenetics, which combines light and genetics to control selected neurons in living brains.

The breakthrough grew from research on a light-sensitive protein in green algae. Scientists found that when the protein was introduced into certain brain cells, light could be used to activate or silence those neurons with remarkable precision.

That has given researchers a powerful way to study the brain circuits involved in behavior and disease. The technique is already informing research into conditions including blindness, depression, addiction, dementia, autism, and schizophrenia. 🧠

A discovery that began with algae has become one of neuroscience’s most important tools.

🎂 Japan just crossed a milestone: for the first time, more than 100,000 people there are age 100 or older.

According to the country's Health and Welfare Ministry, Japan now counts 107,677 centenarians, up nearly 8,000 from the year before. Almost 88 percent are women. The country's oldest resident, Kyoto's Fuyo Kishimoto, recently turned 114.

🎌 Officials point to progress in medical care, along with healthier lifestyles and diet, as part of what's driving the trend. And Japan isn't alone; life expectancies have been rising in many countries over the past several decades.

It's a good reminder of how many more years many of us may be around for, and why that's worth factoring into conversations about the road ahead, from healthcare to how a longer stretch of years gets supported financially.

Another interest-rate hike may be coming this year. The question is when.

Minutes from the Federal Reserve’s September meeting show that most officials believe another increase in the federal funds rate will likely be appropriate before the end of 2026. But policymakers stopped short of signaling whether that could happen at their October 28 meeting or the final meeting of the year on December 9.

📌 Of the 18 Fed officials who submitted rate projections, 16 expected another increase this year.

Why the caution? Inflation remains above the Fed’s 2% target, while officials described the labor market as close to maximum employment and noted that economic growth has picked up.

At the same time, Fed officials emphasized that future decisions will depend on incoming economic data rather than a predetermined timeline.

For now, another hike appears to be on the table, but the timing is still an open question.

Heating oil could make winter noticeably more expensive for millions of households this year. 🏠

The U.S. Energy Information Administration expects heating oil to average $5.26 per gallon this winter, up 34% from last year. Even with a warmer winter expected to reduce consumption, households that primarily use heating oil are projected to spend about 21% more, averaging $2,115 from November through March.

The impact is especially concentrated in the Northeast, where about 3.4 million households rely on heating oil. Meanwhile, households using natural gas or propane are expected to see lower average heating costs this winter.

Actual bills will still depend heavily on the weather and local fuel prices. For households looking to reduce energy use, steps like sealing air leaks, maintaining heating equipment, and lowering the thermostat while away or asleep may help trim consumption. 🌡️
