Today is the 1st day of 5-day Strategic Investment Conference held by Mauldin Economics. I'm always looking to "sharpen the saw" and especially enjoy this annual event. Topics include economic policy, geopolitics, megatrends and investment strategy. This mornings presentation on COVID by Dr. Mike Roizen and Dr. Dan Culver from the Cleveland Clinic stressed that the odds of having a severe reaction from COVID vs a severe reaction from the new vaccines is 40,000 to 1. There is risk of everything in life, but where else can you get those kinds of odds? I also thought this slide from by Bruce Mehlman, an expert on policy and political trends, is worth sharing. It offers strong evidence that health decisions that should be a non-political, science-based decisions are actually heavily skewed by political affiliation.

An interesting idea. But whether the $6,750 comes from the government or from a parent or grandparent, the results are the same. The newborn would have more than a million dollars at retirement. This illustrates the power of compounding and highlights the importance of starting early.

Ray Dalio explains why "cash is trash" and why investors need to get fully invested in equities and real assets (including gold) to protect their wealth. Central banks are monetizing debt and distorting the markets in a desperate attempt to keep our economic system from collapsing. Holding dollars in this environment may be the riskiest choice of all. Jae and I are safe in Coral Gables, having cancelled our planned 7-month relocation to NYC. The "Health Supportive Nutrition" program that Jae was to attend at the Institute of Culinary Education was a casualty of COVID-19. The program was to conclude with a 2-month externship at a local restaurant. Jae's first choice was to work at Dirt Candy, a "vegetable-only" restaurant, under the direction of award-winning chef-owner Amanda Cohen. Chef Cohen announced their closure in this opinion piece published in today's NY Times. It offers a glimpse of what life may be like on the other side of this pandemic and why we need to take better care of our workers.

If it can, the devastated industry should start from scratch after the epidemic and finally take care of its workers.
