Do you have a credit card that has rewards? If you have a cash-back credit card, use your cash-back to fund your savings or help offset your budget. If you get miles, use them to save money on travel. Just be sure to read about any restrictions or limitations.

Tip: Get to know your triggers.

We all have spending triggers. Spending triggers can be certain emotions or places that encourage you to spend. For example, if you can’t go by your favorite coffee shop without spending money there, that’s a trigger. If retail therapy is your way of turning around a crappy day, that’s a trigger. Knowing your spending triggers can help you avoid spending when you don’t need to!

Having and maintaining good credit does not mean you can only have one or two cards. The key is keeping balances and utilization low as well as understanding how each account affects your credit.

Applying for a credit card can lead to a slight dip in your credit score, especially when you apply repeatedly within a short period of time. Each application signifies that you will have less money to pay for every additional credit card or loan you get. And that’s a bad thing from a lender’s perspective. More importantly, applying in bulk tells lenders that you are eager to borrow, which doesn’t bode well for your ability to pay.
