The One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OB3) - Have you been keeping up? Here are some major changes in Higher Ed:

1) IF you are Pell eligible but receive scholarships that equal or above your college's cost of attendance, you will NOT receive the Pell Grant.

2) You must be full-time in order to receive the full annual loan amounts. Full time = 12 hours or more. Anything less than 12 hours, your loan amount wil l be adjusted.

3) IF you are a first time parent loan borrower, you can only borrow $20,000 a year per student. So, if your student is thinking about attending an out of state college, you may want to have a serious discussion with your student.

4) Grad PLUS loans will not be available for grad students after June 30, 2026.

The 2024-2025 FAFSA application may not open until December but there is one thing students and parents can do right now to prepare - create an FSA-ID. The FSA-ID is your electronic signature for all things dealing with Federal Student Aid. Whether it is completing the FAFSA or completing your master promissory note if borrowing student loans, your electronic signature is needed. Students and parents must create their own FSA-ID using separate email addresses and phone numbers. By creating your FSA-ID, this means as soon as the FAFSA opens in December, you can begin the application. If you wait to create your FSA-ID on the day the FAFSA becomes available, it will not go through because upon creating your FSA-iD, your information will need to be verified which can take up to 2-3 business days. You can create your FSA-ID now via this link, https://studentaid.gov/fsa-id/create-account/launch.

Three major changes to FAFSA for 2024-2025: 1)Create FSA-ID for student and parent
2) Roles Based - student and parent(s) will now be referenced as contributors.
3) Everybody must consent to allow the IRS to release federal tax information, even when f you have not filed. No consent = no aid.
