Northeastern Basketball Player of the Week (Feb. 13-19)

#22 6’3” Sr. Forward Payton Lumpkin

Heading into the week, the Knights took their TEC undefeated record and put it on the line against two conference rivals. Playing their 4th and 5th games in a 10-day stretch, the Knights would be relying on their senior leadership to get the job done. Senior Payton Lumpkin stood out in the 2-game set. On Tuesday night, the squad took it to Cambridge City Lincoln by a score of 79-20 with their physicality and defensive intensity while starting to get their offense rolling. Lumpkin was among the stars of the night by scoring 10 points on 5 of 5 shooting and getting 9 rebounds. To go along with Payton, Junior Caleb Harmon scored a career-high 20 points on the evening, Sophomore Michael Henry III connected on 5 3-pointers for a career-high 15 points, Senior Ben Deitsch contributed a career-high 15 assists, while Senior Raedhyn Foust slid in with 17 points during the contest. Friday night was a different animal for the Knights as they went to the historic Wi******er Fieldhouse to take on the Falcons in a battle of the conference’s last two unbeaten teams. After a back-and-forth physical 1st half, the Knights exerted their style of play and pulled away with a 56-41 win to clinch at least a share of the Tri Eastern Conference title. The team’s ability to lock down defensively and rebound down the stretch were keys to the victory. Lumpkin again came up clutch in a big game by tossing in a game-high 17 points to go along with 9 physical rebounds. Foust again found his way deep into the scoring column by adding 15 points on the night. Lumpkin, who has been more assertive as of late, now averages 9.4 points, 7.7 rebounds, and a block per game, while also taking 20 charges on the season which is near tops in the entire state of Indiana. Congratulations to him on a great week of conference games last week!

The Knights (16-5, 7-0) returned to action last night on the road in Connersville at the Spartan Bowl. The team couldn’t quite make up for a sluggish start by falling 47-36 in the contest. Foust led the Knights in scoring with 16 points, while Lumpkin added 9 with 7 rebounds. On Friday night, Union City makes the trip to Fountain City where the Knights will try to close out an undefeated conference season with sole possession of the title. Seniors Ben Deitsch, Payton Lumpkin, and Raedhyn Foust will all be honored for their accomplishments between the JV and Varsity games, as they look to finish off their 3rd TEC Championship in their 4-year careers. The IHSAA Sectional is scheduled to start next Tuesday night at Hagerstown taking on Shenandoah. Best of luck the rest of this week and into the tournament to Northeastern, bring home some W’s!

Northeastern Basketball Player of the Week (Feb. 6-12)

#2 6’1” Jr. Forward Carson Terrell

Due to some difficult postponements and reschedules, the Knights were tasked with a long week with 3 Tri-Eastern Conference games, 2 of which being on the road. Junior Carson Terrell used his 3-sport conditioning to show up for all 3 matchups to help lead the Knights to consecutive wins, while sporting one of the most efficient shooting weeks in recent memory. On Wednesday, the team played their only home game of the week hosting Union County. After a slow start, the Knights pulled away with a 69-31 victory in front of their home crowd. Terrell had a modest night statistically but was just getting warmed up for the rest of the week. He scored 6 points on 3 of 4 shooting from the field, while he added 4 rebounds and 2 steals in the contest while the Knights smothered the Patriots defensively. Senior Raedhyn Foust led the team in scoring by tossing in 19 points. Friday night the squad took to the road at Tri High. After another sluggish start, the team ran away in the second half to win the contest 57-28 over a feisty Tri team. After earning the start, Terrell picked up some steam by leading the team in scoring on the night with 12 points on 4 of 5 shooting, and again amassing 4 rebounds and 2 steals. To finish the long week, the Knights headed to longtime foe Hagerstown. There, the Knights took it to the county rival, winning the game 59-29. Terrell saved his best performance for last. He finished with 14 points on a perfect 7 for 7 night from the floor, while snagging a team-high 7 boards and getting 2 steals. Foust again led the Knights’ scoring charge with a smooth 23 on the night. Terrell had a great week, averaging over 10 points per game on the week while shooting an astounding 87.5% clip from the floor. On the season, he is averaging 5.3 points and 5.1 rebounds per contest.

The Lady Knights’ season ended on Tuesday night. After knocking off Centerville 60-14 in the opening round of the sectional, the team took on host school Shenandoah in the 2nd round. They won the game 48-26 to advance to the snow-delayed final on Tuesday against Union County. Unfortunately, the run at a sectional title came to a close with a 44-34 defeat. The Lady Knights ended the season with a 10-15 overall record. The Knights (15-4, 6-0) returned to action last night (2/15) against Lincoln. They won the game in convincing fashion, 79-20. A few early front-runners for next week’s award as Jr. Caleb Harmon scored a career-high 20 points, So. Michael Henry added a career-high 15 points with 5 3’s, Sr. Ben Deitsch dished out a career-high 15 assists, Raedhyn Foust tossed in 17 points, and Sr. Payton Lumpkin scored 10 points along with 9 rebounds. The Knights hit the road Friday night in a matchup that will decide the TEC Championship at Wi******er in the Wi******er Fieldhouse. Best of luck to the team as they look to bring home another conference title!

Northeastern Basketball Player of the Week (Jan. 24-30)

#31 5’9” Sr. Forward Anna Drake

In the final week of the regular season, the Northeastern Lady Knights had a pair of games, a Wednesday bout visiting top-ranked Wi******er and hosting Cambridge City Lincoln on Friday night. The team struggled against the tough opponent in Wi******er on Wednesday, falling 75-49 to the TEC Champion. Friday night’s ‘Senior Night’ was a different story, especially for Senior Anna Drake! Drake, who is involved in many activities and sports throughout the Northeastern Community, was all smiles Friday night during the festivities that Senior Night brings. Her mood got even better once the game got going! The senior capped her home career with a career-high 15 points in the Lady Knights’ 58-20 romp over Lincoln. The win sealed the team’s regular season overall record at 8-14, with a 5-3 mark in the TEC to finish 4th overall. Anna was a big part of the team’s successes this season, averaging 5.7 points per game while adding 4 rebounds per contest. Congratulations again to Anna as she helps lead the Lady Knights into the postseason!

The Lady Knights opened up IHSAA Sectional played last night at Shenandoah High School, winning their opening-round matchup against familiar TEC opponent Centerville, 60-14. The team will return to action in the 2nd round on Friday night playing against the host school in the 2nd game of the evening. Let’s get there and get a nice crowd to support our ladies while they chase after a sectional championship! The Knights (11-3, 2-0) had their Thursday night game with Lincoln postponed, then knocked off Randolph Southern on Saturday night 58-28. The team will return to action on Thursday night at Hagerstown in a TEC matchup before hosting Tipton in a Saturday afternoon matinee game. Best of luck to both teams this week and stay safe with the impending weather!

#2 6’1” Jr. Forward Carson Terrell

The Knights have been gaining momentum lately by winning 6 games in a row, and 8 of their last 9, Junior Carson Terrell has been a big factor during the stretch. The Knights hosted Rushville on Friday night and won the contest in runaway fashion, 72-33. The junior forward had a solid outing, scoring 8 points on a perfect 3 for 3 shooting night, while grabbing a rebound, dishing out an assist, and causing two defensive deflections. Modest night statistically speaking, but Terrell’s effect goes well beyond stats for the Knights. On Friday he garnered his second varsity start of the season and was assigned to guard one of the best players on Rushville’s roster, helping the team hold the Lions well under their season average in scoring, while showing his development with post moves and footwork with that basketball. Senior Raedhyn Foust led in scoring with 27 points and fellow senior Payton Lumpkin notched a double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. On Saturday the team hit the road in a girl/boy doubleheader with Blue River. Terrell was much more assertive on the stat line as he had career highs in both scoring and rebounding, scoring 13 points and securing 8 rebounds in the Knights’ 74-51 win over the Vikings. Carson was as active on the court as he’s been all season. For a player more known for his toughness, rebounding, and defense, he made several aggressive moves and cuts towards the basket on the offensive end while crashing the glass hard. Grant Luebbe led the Knights in scoring with 19 points, while Lumpkin got his 2nd double-double in as many nights, scoring 12 points and adding 13 rebounds. Terrell has been a player that seemingly improves different aspects of his game on a daily and weekly basis, while keeping his constant competitive edge on the physicality of the game. The 3-sport athlete has been a consistent force for the Knights, averaging 4.8 points per game and grabbing 5.5 rebounds each night.

The Lady Knights (7-13, 4-2) split the week’s games. They went on the road Friday night to beat Knightstown in a TEC matchup, 43-25, before succumbing to the Blue River Lady Vikings in the front end of the girl/boy doubleheader 46-70. The Lady Knights look forward to the final week of the regular season, travelling to Wi******er on Wednesday and hosting Cambridge City Lincoln on Friday evening where all the girls youth basketball teams will be honored. The squad received their IHSAA Sectional Tournament draw on Sunday, drawing familiar Centerville in their 1st round matchup. That sectional will be played at Shenandoah. The Knights (10-3, 2-0) have had their Thursday contest with Lincoln postponed to a later date but will host Randolph Southern into Fountain City on Saturday night. Congratulations again to Carson Terrell on this week’s award, and best of luck to both teams this week! Bring home some W’s!

Northeastern Basketball Player of the Week (Jan. 9-15)

#34 6’8” Sr. Forward Raedhyn Foust

We have our 1st 2-time winner for the 2021-2022 season! Senior Raedhyn Foust came to play as the Knights jumped back into conference play on Saturday night. The team travelled to Knightstown after getting through the holiday break and Wayne County Tournament. Jumping all over the Panthers early, the Knights prevailed 66-37. Foust led the charge for Northeastern tabbing a career-high 27 points on 11 of 17 shooting, including 3 of 4 from the 3-point line, as well as sharing the team lead with 7 rebounds and 3 steals. Raedhyn has admittedly struggled a bit from the perimeter in the early part of the season, but mentioned a feeling of relief to see some 3’s go down along with a thunderous dunk off a steal in the 2nd half. Fellow seniors also had great games with Foust as Payton Lumpkin scored 18 points and grabbed 7 rebounds, and point guard Ben Deitsch played a very nice floor game garnering a season-high 8 assists and 4 steals. Raedhyn continues to lead the Knights in scoring, putting up 15.8 points per contest to go along with 5.7 rebounds and almost 2 steals per night. A bit of special news this week for Foust, as he officially announced his commitment to continue his academic and athletic career in the fall at Indiana University East! IU East is getting a great basketball player, but an even better individual and young man in Raedhyn. The Northeastern coaches, teammates, and community are very proud of this young man, and it is exciting that we’ll be able to watch him closely the next 4 years at the college level! Congratulations Raedhyn!

The Knights (8-3, 2-0) return to action with a couple non-conference affairs this week. A much-improved Rushville team will come to Fountain City on Friday night, while the team goes back on the road Saturday in a Boy/Girl split game at Blue River. The Lady Knights (6-12, 3-2) look to bounce back after a couple tough losses last week with a makeup game Friday night on the road at TEC opponent Knightstown, which was postponed due to illness, before again going on the road with the aforementioned Boy/Girl contest Saturday evening at Blue River. Congratulations again to Raedhyn on his recent successes, and best of luck to our Knights’ teams this weekend!

Northeastern Basketball Players of the Week (Wayne County Tournament)

#4 5’3” Fr. Ava Mikesell
#40 6’3” Jr. Grant Luebbe

Last week the Northeastern Knights basketball teams took to the 2022 Wayne County Tournament, with the girls looking for their 3rd consecutive title and the boys looking for their 4th. After receiving byes to the championship games due to Covid-related issues with their 1st round opponents, both squads had the Hagerstown Tigers standing in the way of a championship. Freshman Point Guard Ava Mikesell and Junior Wing Grant Luebbe made sure the coveted jugs came back to Fountain City! In the hard-fought girls’ game, the Lady Knights came out victorious 36-27. Mikesell led the way on the floor and in the scoring department by netting 15 points while tying for the team lead with 6 rebounds. When times got tight in the 2nd half, the Lady Knights often looked towards Ava to keep things under control and to make a play. The freshman guard has played well beyond her years thus far, putting up solid numbers averaging 9 points, 2.1 rebounds, and getting nearly 3 steals per contest. The future is bright for this young star! In the boys’ game, the Knights got off to a sluggish start by only leading 12-10 after 1 quarter, then turned on the jets in the final 3 frames to run away from the Tigers, 59-20. Grant Luebbe has been a steady force for the Knights through the 1st half of the season, and the Wayne County Title Game was no exception. Luebbe tied for the team lead with 14 points in the matchup on 6 of 9 shooting, while bringing in 4 rebounds. Raedhyn Foust also netted 14 points and Payton Lumpkin grabbed a season-high 12 boards during the game. The junior swingman is generally regarded as one of the team’s and TEC’s premier defenders but has been much improved from an offensive standpoint for the Knights. Grant averages 9.2 points and 2.8 rebounds per contest, while shooting 33% from 3-point range and 91% from the foul line.

The Lady Knights (6-11, 3-2) returned to action last night against Tri, and will travel to East Central this Saturday for a noon varsity tip. The Knights (7-3, 1-0) go on the road Saturday night at Knightstown to start a run of 7 TEC games out of their final 11. Congratulations again to all the Knights’ teams on their Wayne County Championships, and best of luck the rest of this week!

Northeastern Basketball Player of the Week (Dec. 20 – 26)

#34 – 6’8” Sr. Forward – Raedhyn Foust

On December 23rd, the Northeastern Knights went on the road to Delta High School to do battle in a holiday tournament against a pair of Indiana 3A teams. Although the team wasn’t quite awake in the morning game against an undefeated Bishop Chatard team, suffering a 50-37 loss, they set their sights on regaining their momentum in the evening game against a feisty Delta Eagles club. Senior Captain Raedhyn Foust led his team back on track with a big win. After only managing 6 points in the morning game, the 6’8” big man scored a season-high 25 points in the Knights’ 55-43 win. To go along with his 6-7 shooting performance (including a thunderous put-back dunk), he went 13-17 from the free throw line to ice the game and controlled the boards by grabbing 9 rebounds, he also added a block during the contest. Foust has become a highly sought-after recruit from many colleges in the area while he has evolved his game from being strictly a post player to playing on the perimeter offensively and guarding smaller ballhandlers, sometimes 25 feet from the basket and beyond. On the season, the senior is averaging 15.9 points per game on 59% shooting from the field, and 6 rebounds per contest.

The Knights (now 6-3, 1-0) returned to action on December 29th in a home win against Lapel, 50-36. Grant Luebbe led all scorers with 17 points while Raedhyn chipped in 12, and Payton Lumpkin added 9 rebounds. The Lady Knights (5-10, 3-1) got back into action in Triton Central’s holiday tournament. They went 1-2 in the event, falling to Jac-Cen-Del and Southport, while adding a revenge win against Franklin County. Both teams will return to action next Thursday, Jan. 6, in the Wayne County Tournament taking on Cambridge City Lincoln. The annual tournament will once again be held at Hagerstown. Best of luck to both teams next week!

Northeastern Basketball Player of the Week (Dec. 13-Dec. 19)

#22 – 6’3” Sr. Forward – Payton Lumpkin

The Northeastern Knights had a couple tough losses from the 2020-2021 season to avenge, and Senior Payton Lumpkin made sure it happened according to plan against 2 state-ranked teams. In doing so, he earned his 1st ‘Player of the Week’ honor on the season. On Tuesday night, the Knights took down the Blackford Bruins 54-25. Lumpkin led all scorers on the evening tallying a season-high 17 points on 7-11 shooting from the field, while grabbing 7 rebounds, dishing out 2 assists and taking a charge. The Knights (who give up 31 points per game defensively) smothered the Bruins’ offense, holding them to 41 points under their season average at the time. On Friday night, the Knights got the proverbial monkey off their back by taking down Shenandoah in convincing fashion, 58-28. The 3-year starter again made his impact felt in the contest. Lumpkin was a stat sheet stuffer on the night, scoring 8 points, snagging 7 rebounds, handing out 3 assists, and had a career-high 7 steals on the evening while turning the Raiders over 22 times. The Knights had 3 players reach double-digit scoring with Senior Raedhyn Foust leading the way with 12 points, while Juniors Keaton Mikesell and Grant Luebbe both scored 10. It was a great team win and week for the Knights to get back on track after a tough loss the week prior and battling some minor illness. Payton led the charge, as he has in many cases throughout the course of the season and his career. Lumpkin is averaging 8.2 points, 7.2 rebounds, 2.2 steals, and taking a charge per game in the 2021-2022 campaign.

The Knights (4-2, 1-0) return to action on Thursday on the road in the Delta Holiday Classic. The JV plays at 10:00 am and Varsity will tip at noon. Both teams will play against 3A Indianapolis Bishop Chatard, with game times later in the day dependent on the outcome of the morning games. The Lady Knights (4-8, 3-1) are off all week on Christmas break, but will return to the court December 28th and 29th in the Southport Holiday Tournament. Best of luck this week to the Knights, and a Merry Christmas to all!
