Colt-Vien & Associates: Allstate Insurance You might say I fell into insurance. Over the years, I moved up to senior positions. So I bought his agency in 2004, and I haven’t looked back since.

I was recruited into the business when I was still at Plymouth State University, and I started working as an agent right after graduation. But I knew that, to advance any further, I’d have to leave New England behind — something I was reluctant to do. As luck would have it, I had a meeting with an agency owner in Rutland City, Vermont who was preparing for his retirement. He said he had a number of buyers for his agency, but that he was hesitant to sell until he spoke to another buyer that he had in mind. That person was me. It was unexpected but exactly the opportunity I was looking for. The chance to buy my second agency, in the Granite Building above the Bank here in Concord, came about in much the same manner in 2014 when the former owner asked me to take over his business. I was excited to buy an agency in my native state (I grew up in Gorham), and I worked closely with the former owner to do right by customers during the transition. I count myself lucky to do the work I do and to do it living among such beautiful lakes and mountains (if it’s happening outdoors, count me in). So we do our part to keep the community strong. We’re members of the Greater Concord Chamber of Commerce and we support the Capitol Region Board of Realtors — and my team knows I’ll always support (and fund) the groups and charities that drive their passions, too. National Preparedness Month is a reminder that preparedness is power!

I’ve got another great tip for you, Tip #2: Make a home inventory checklist. It takes a little effort, but it’ll be worth it if you ever find yourself in claims situation.

•Note all the type of items in your home: original price, purchase year and serial numbers of each item (including the receipt, if possible).
• Create a visual record of your belongings, take photos or videos.
• Store your list digitally as well as physically.
• Don’t forget to regularly update your inventory.
