LCHIP, Land and Community Heritage Investment Program

LCHIP, Land and Community Heritage Investment Program We help them preserve New Hampshire's natural, cultural and historic resources.

LCHIP is an independent state authority that matches grants to New Hampshire communities, conservation commissions, historic preservation groups and other non-profits. The historic and natural resources that are protected and conserved through the Land and Community Heritage Investment Program (LCHIP) grants are cornerstones of the New Hampshire Advantage, contributing to both the quality of life

and the economic and environmental well-being of the people of the state. It is critically important to continue to invest in these resources that protect the character and values of New Hampshire. As time passes, both the value and the cost of protecting these resources will increase.

June Green. As early as the 19th century, the confluence of the Contoocook and Warner Rivers (where Bohanan Farm lies) was recognized as a pre-settlement site heavily used by Native Americans. A stone marker and plaque along the riverbank states that "The first public bridge" (in Contoocook) was built there in 1779. The 413-acre farm was a conserved by Five Rivers Conservation Trust and the town of Hopkinton. Contoocook Creamery at Bohanan Farm photos by Bob LaPree.

Diaries belonging to Nancy Chesley (1839-1916) document the period August 30, 1912 - December 30, 1914. Entries chronicle day-to-day farm activities such as: hauling hay to the train station, putting up grape jelly and Elderberry juice, oystering, getting the mowing machine (September 1912), digging potatoes, getting in salt
hay, getting Dewey shod in Newmarket, pulling beans, getting in onion tomatoes and putting them down in the cellar, baking pies for Thanksgiving, and "it snowed all afternoon, got enough for sleighing." Also referenced are summer boarders. An extensive rehabilitation of the 1804 Bickford-Chesley farmhouse in Durham has recently saved it from being unoccupied and underutilized.

The green fields of summer! The 88-acre Barker's Farm LLC was purchased in 1917 by Willard Baker. It was conserved in 2019 with help from SELT - Southeast Land Trust of New Hampshire. The farm store is open so head on down. Don't forget to pick up a bouquet of brilliant flowers.

Site visit photos of a recently completed project at The Warner House. The focus was on a cupola exposed to the elements for three centuries. Detached from the house, the cupola was moved by crane to the backyard for reconstruction. Once reinstalled, a plaster artisan used original materials for interior repairs. Not a bad view from the top! Photo credit to LCHIP's George Born.
