For founder Maura Duggan, cookies stir up memories of baking alongside her mother and grandmother growing up. What started in 2004 as a batch of decorated shortbread cookies in her Walpole, Massachusetts kitchen has grown into a bakery known for its thin, crispy cookies made with real butter, real eggs, and zero artificial ingredients. Sustainability is baked into the business model too โ€“ Fancypants uses upcycled oat flour left over from oat milk production, and turns its own food scraps into renewable energy through a local zero-waste partnership. Yet another reason to keep a bag or two on hand.

Wildgrain โ€“ the Somerville-born bread and pastry subscription that ships frozen, oven-ready loaves and croissants to more than 100,000 members nationwide โ€“ began when co-founders Johanna Hartzheim and Ismail Salhi couldnโ€™t easily find the nutrient-dense bread (that also tasted delicious) they had become accustomed to while living in Europe. Last night, we hosted an in-person partner event at Eastie Farm in East Boston, bringing together Walden Mutual partners, board members, corporators, and staff for an evening of food, conversation, and community.

We heard from Charley Cummings (Founder & CEO of Walden Mutual Bank), Mike Farber (Co-Founder of GreenStory Collective), Kannan Thiruvengadam (Executive Director of Eastie Farm), and Jonathan LeBlanc (Owner & Operator of Leblanc Family Farm) on what it means to align money with values.
