Georgia’s HB 1344, the Insurance Affordability and Claims Integrity Act, was signed in May 2026. It extended the deadline to file property and casualty insurance claims from one year to two years.

It also created a wind-mitigation grant program offering up to $6,000 in matching funds for qualifying home improvements, including:
• Roof straps
• Reinforced roof attachments
• Impact-rated shingles
• Sealing openings

Your car got totaled over a dent? Sometimes, yes. The reason may be less “major wreck” and more “tiny bumper computer with a very expensive opinion.”

The CCC 2026 Crash Course Report says total-loss frequency is at an all-time high: 23.1% of all auto claims. Sensor calibration now appears in roughly 28% of repairable estimates.

Modern bumpers can hide sensors, cameras, and radar. After a fender-bender, the repair may involve replacing parts, scanning safety systems, and recalibrating ADAS, not just popping out a dent. When the projected repair cost gets close to or exceeds a large share of the vehicle’s value, the insurer may declare it a total loss instead of repairing it.

That can happen to a newer, tech-loaded vehicle or an older vehicle. Practically: don’t assume a small-looking impact means a simple cosmetic repair. Ask what systems were affected and whether calibration is required.

• Use surge-protector power strips for valuable electronics. Basic power strips may only act like extension cords, so look for actual surge protection.
• Consider unplugging sensitive electronics during severe storms: especially if you’re already doing the frantic “save the TV!” dash.
